How the Bible is divided

  • The Bible is made of 66 books, such as Genesis, Psalms and John. Each book is divided into chapters, and each chapter into verses, short numbered sentences.
  • When you see something like John 3:16, it means the book of John, chapter 3, verse 16. You can type it straight into the search on Bible Love.

Reading the Bible

  • Choose “The Bible” at the top of the page. Under “Choose a passage”, pick a book, then a chapter, and choose “Open chapter”.
  • Not sure where to begin? Start with John, the book about the life of Jesus. You also find it under “Good places to start”.
  • “Today's Bible reading” on the Bible page gives you a few short readings for each day. If you read them every day, you read the whole Bible in a year.

Reading a chapter

  • Choose “A+” to make the text bigger and “A−” to make it smaller. Your phone or computer remembers the size for the next chapter and the next visit.
  • At the end of the chapter, the button with the next chapter, such as “John 4”, takes you on. “All John chapters” shows every chapter in the book.
  • On a computer, “Print this chapter” prints only the Bible text, without the menu and buttons.
  • Tap a verse to choose it, and tap another verse to choose all the verses in between. “Copy” copies the words with the reference and a link, and “Share” opens your phone's share menu, for example for Facebook or WhatsApp. Tap the verse again to close.

How to read a passage

  • Open a passage, for example John 3:16. You land on the whole chapter, at that verse.
  • Read the verses before and after. John 3 begins with a man named Nicodemus who comes to Jesus at night with his questions, and verse 16 is part of what Jesus answers him.
  • Ask who is speaking and to whom. Here Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus, a teacher who wanted to understand him.
  • Read it slowly, and read it again. Pray about what you read, and ask God to help you understand.
  • Go on from there. The button at the end of the chapter takes you to the next one, and the search finds other places about the same thing, such as eternal life.

The words of Jesus

  • On the Jesus page you can search only what Jesus himself said. Find “Search the words of Jesus” and type a word, for example peace.
  • Every day, “Words of Jesus for today” shows one of the things he said.

The Psalms

  • The Psalms are songs and prayers to God. Choose “Psalms” at the top of the page, and start with “Psalm for today” or one of the “Well-known Psalms”, such as Psalm 23.

Hymns

  • Choose “Hymns” at the top of the page. Under “Find a hymn”, type a title or words you remember, for example cross.
  • “Hymn for today” gives you a new hymn every day, and “Most loved hymns” lists the hymns most people know, such as Jesus Loves Me.
  • “All hymns” lists every hymn from A to Z. Open a group to see the titles.
  • A hymn works like a chapter of the Bible: choose a verse to copy or share it, and on a computer “Print this hymn” prints only the words.

Daily Devotion

  • A devotion is a short reading to start your day with God. Daily Devotion gives you a new one every day at midnight where you live, written by Christian writers from long ago, such as Charles Spurgeon.
  • The button under the reading opens the Bible verse it is about, and “Earlier this week” lists the readings of the last days.

The Holy Calendar

  • Through the year we celebrate seasons and holidays, such as Advent before Christmas and Easter in the spring. The Holy Calendar shows them for every day, with a Bible reading.
  • The calendar opens on today, and “Coming up:” tells you which holiday is next.
  • To get every holiday in your phone, choose “Subscribe to the Holy Calendar”. On an iPhone, confirm in the Calendar app. With Google Calendar, open Google Calendar on a computer, add a calendar from a URL and paste this address: /calendar/holy-calendar.ics.

Light and dark

  • If the screen feels too bright, choose “Dark” at the top of the page. Choose the same button again to go back to light. Your phone or computer remembers your choice, and on your first visit Bible Love follows its own light or dark setting.

Support and contact

  • Bible Love is free. If you want to help keep it running, choose “Support Bible Love” at the top of the page, or read more on the Support page.
  • If something is wrong or hard to use, email contact@biblelove.org. We read every message.
